Scuba Buddy Checks and Predive Safety
Turn the familiar buddy check into a practical team briefing covering gas, releases, weights, computers, route, limits, and emergencies.
A buddy check is not reciting an acronym beside two untouched equipment piles. It is a mutual functional check: each diver learns how the other diver's safety equipment works, verifies the gas and computer, and confirms the limits that will end the dive.
Common buddy-check acronyms
Training agencies group the same core checks in different ways. Use the wording taught in your current course, and make sure every letter prompts an action rather than a spoken answer.
BWRAF
- B — BCD: test inflation, deflation, the low-pressure inflator connection, and the controls each diver may need.
- W — Weights: confirm the amount, placement, security, and how ditchable weights are released.
- R — Releases: locate and check harness, cylinder-band, and weight-system releases.
- A — Air: confirm the valve is open and pressure is adequate, breathe from each second stage while watching the gauge, and locate the alternate-air source.
- F — Final check: verify mask, fins, computer, exposure protection, and accessories, then confirm both divers are ready.
BAR
Buoyancy, Air, Releases. BAR is a shorter grouping used by BSAC. It does not mean fewer physical checks: weighting, gas flow, alternate-air access, and the operation of every relevant release still belong inside those three headings.
SEABAG
Site, Emergencies, Activities, Buoyancy, Air, Gear. NAUI's sequence is broader than an equipment-only buddy check. The first three letters review conditions, emergency arrangements, and the purpose of the dive; the final three check the divers and their equipment.
Check the equipment together
- Buoyancy: inflate from the cylinder, deflate through each control you may need, confirm the inflator connection, and identify oral inflation.
- Releases and harness: trace buckles and clips, confirm they are secure, and show how the system is removed.
- Weights: state how much is carried, identify ditchable and non-ditchable weight, and physically show the release direction.
- Final equipment: mask, fins, exposure protection, cutting device, lights, surface marker, compass, and accessories are present and secured.
Configuration changes require a new check. A weight moved after the check or an inflator disconnected for transport makes the earlier result stale. Use the weighting guide to establish ballast before this final verification.
Confirm gas, valves, and computers
- Read each gauge and state the starting pressure aloud.
- Breathe several times from each second stage while watching the pressure gauge for a drop that may indicate a closed or restricted valve.
- Locate and deploy each alternate-air source; agree which donor procedure the team will use.
- For Nitrox, compare the analyzed cylinder label with the computer's oxygen setting and verify MOD using the MOD calculator during planning.
- Confirm both computers use the intended gas, conservatism, units, and audible/visual alarms.
A pressure reading is not a valve check
Brief limits and emergencies
Agree maximum depth, route, expected time, turn pressure, reserve, ascent rate, safety stop, leader, communication, and what happens if the team separates. The gas planner can prepare the numbers; the briefing makes them shared limits.
Discuss conditions that may change the plan: current, visibility, entry and exit, boat recall, entanglement, cold, and each diver's experience. Identify emergency oxygen, first aid, communications, and local assistance before anyone needs them.
Technical-diving acronyms
Technical teams often add a structured review of roles, gas strategy, decompression, route, and contingencies. These mnemonics complement a configuration-specific equipment checklist; they are not substitutes for training or a written checklist.
SADDDD
Sequence, Air, Distance, Depth, Direction, Dive. This older DIR plan review assigns team order and responsibilities, confirms gas and decompression or bailout needs, defines distance and depth limits, agrees direction, and finishes with the shared dive plan.
START
S-drills, Team, Air, Route, Tables. In the TDI sequence, the team checks gas-sharing readiness and bubbles, one another's equipment, gas matching, the entry/exit and underwater route, and the planned depth, time, and decompression schedule.
GUE EDGE
Goal, Unified team, Equipment, Exposure, Decompression, Gas, Environment. GUE introduced this sequence as a replacement for SADDDD. It aligns the team on the dive objective and roles, equipment compatibility, depth and time exposure, decompression and gas strategies, and environmental conditions.
Make the check repeatable
Use the acronym taught by your agency—BWRAF, BAR, SEABAG, or another sequence—but attach a physical action to every letter. Run it in the same order, without interruptions, after both divers are fully dressed. If interrupted, restart the affected section rather than relying on memory.
A good check is brief because the team has practiced it, not because steps are skipped. It ends with an explicit readiness question: gas on, regulators breathing, computers active, releases known, plan agreed, and both divers genuinely willing to dive.
